Date: Thursday, February 13th, 2025
Time: 6:30pm - 9:00pm

Discover the intriguing world of botanical folklore with our Poisonous Plant Pocket Guide Workshop—an embroidery experience that delves into deadly Nightshade, also known as Belladonna.

This enigmatic plant has long been associated with women, revered for its use in enhancing beauty but equally infamous for its dark role when love goes sour. Often employed as a subtle, slow-acting poison, Nightshade earned a notorious reputation as a deadly instrument in tales of heartbreak and revenge.

Led by artist, educator, and writer Sarah Zanchetta, renowned for her textile artistry and passion for reconnecting with nature through hands-on mending and the exploration of toxic plants, you’ll uncover the myths, folklore, and scientific insights surrounding this deadly specimen.

During this two-and-a-half-hour session, you’ll master five beginner-friendly stitches—back-stitch, leaf stitch, satin stitch, long-short stitch, and French knot—that will bring the enchanting silhouette of Nightshade to life. Whether you’re a seasoned stitcher or a complete beginner, this workshop invites you into a creative exploration of nature’s darker side.

All materials are provided, including an embroidery hoop and thread, allowing you to take your project home and continue refining your craft. Step into a space where the mysteries of Nightshade and the art of embroidery intertwine to create a uniquely magical experience. ✨

Instructor

Sarah Zanchetta (she/they) is an artist, educator, and writer whose textile practice dives into her loss of connection to nature through hands-on mending and research of poisonous plants. She questions what it means to be in kinship with the poisonous, creating intimate works as a space to unfold curiosities, care, and anxieties about what grows beneath our feet.

Zanchetta is a graduate of the Master of Visual Studies Studio program at the University of Toronto and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from OCAD University. Her practice has been supported by the Ontario Arts Council, and has collaborative community-based work in the permanent collections of the Kortright Centre for Conservation and Evergreen Brick Works. Their work has been shown internationally, with most recent exhibitions at Fais-Moi L'Art (Montreal, Canada) and Art Museum (Toronto, Canada).
