Dobby was a male house-elf in service to the Malfoy family. His masters were secretly Dark Wizards who treated him cruelly. In 1992, he was freed from his service to the Malfoys through a clever trick orchestrated by his friend, Harry Potter. After being freed, he experienced bouts of unemployment before finally being hired to work in the kitchens at Hogwarts.

In 1998, he bravely saved the lives of Harry and his companions at the Malfoy Manor but was fatally wounded in the process. Harry notably dug Dobby's grave without magic and carved into the headstone of the grave "HERE LIES DOBBY, A FREE ELF."
